Stern action against officers’ misinformation on cut-outs
Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka has instructed Police Chief Mahinda Balasuriya to take disciplinary action against police officers who incorrectly reported that election propaganda material including cutouts and banners had been removed in their respective divisions
Elections commissioner Dissanayake last month allocated Rs. 12.8 million to the police as costs for removing unlawful election posters and cutouts in public places and ordered the police force to immediately get down to work.
The Elections Secretariat had received a large number of complaints that two key contenders at the January 26 polls were displaying their propaganda material in violation of election laws.
Police have blamed lack of funding for the task and failed to remove all such posters and cutouts up to now.
