Cutouts, posters out by Thursday: Elections Commissioner
The Elections Commissioner (EC) has ordered that all Presidential election related posters, cutouts and banners in public places be removed by Thursday, January 7, said United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Tissa Attanayake.
Representatives and candidates for the January 26 Presidential election met Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake this evening (January 5) at the Elections Secretariat in Rajagiriya. Kandy District Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said that the EC had promised to take stern action against those whose unlawful propaganda materials were not removed from public places.
The Commissioner also accepted that there were several complaints against the Police on elections related issues like complaints being not accepted. Action on that too would be taken, the EC had said according to Mr. Attanayake.
He also added that the EC had empowered Jayampathi Hettiarachchi to monitor and control the state media from today.
“Don’t wait till I do all these things. All candidates will have to cooperate to make this campaign free and fair,” Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake had reportedly stated.
